Anyone else have Dobies?

I, for one, am sick of this bad reputation Dobermans have. Anyone else? I have the sweetest Dobie in the world, who wouldn't hurt anyone, yet people see us coming and they grab their kids and cross the street! Our neighbors like her now, but when we first got her, I can't tell you how many people said what are you thinking?! She is the type of dog that when someone comes over, she runs to the door, not to bark, but to greet them with her little tail wagging like crazy. As soon as they walk in she is velcro to them just wanting to be loved. Kids poke her in the eye, pull her ears, whatever, and she loves it! It's time people realize what loyal, awesome dogs they are. Yes. they are protective, but only when necessary. When there isn't a problem they are pure love. Anyone else agree?

My favorite breed of dogs!!! I do love them. Dobies had gotten a bad name way back in the 70's. I think they were the popular breed back then in the hands of the wrong people. Like pits are today!! I'm not saying they were raised to fight, but a lot of them were being raised to be vicious, unfortunately!!! I do agree that they are falsely accused %26 get a bad rap. Everyone I have ever met are big babies that wants attention %26 love. In my eyes they are lovers NOT fighters!!! Dobermans will always be in my home and in my heart.
I know how you feel i don't have a dobie but i have a pit bull and she is the biggest baby people don't realize that dogs are reflection of their owners and the way they are raised, not a breed. some breeds do have bad histories but if you were to look at how they were raised you'd be able to find out why
I think that people are associating the image with the working lineage such as I raised. My working Dobermans were from the Sheriff's Kennel. They needed good training and socialization to be good citizens..But they were excellent at police work.
Awesome, yes! I love them! However, the working lines are not for irresponsible or inexperienced owners. If a family gets a working type Dobe, and leaves him in the backyard, with little training and no socialization, as so often happens, that dog is not to be trusted.
My show Dobermans were from Imported Schutzund and working/show lines..the German Dobes are quite serious...not at all the tail wagging, outgoing and 'loves everybody' dog that you describe.
The bad reputation is derived from those sadly misplaced working dogs...
Yes I agree we had a male and female . they were the sweetest dogs . They would greet you at the door with a friendly jump. NOT BAD DOGS AT ALL.
I don't have Dobies, but have been around them. I have German Shepherds and they get the same rep. I was actually amazed to hear a few years ago that Germany itself was trying to pass a law against not only Dobies, but also German Shepherds and Rotties. OF course it didn't pass, but breeding for all three breeds is very stricked in Germany
Unfortunately it is the way they have been portrayed for years, as a security dog. Look how many movies have the viscous looking Dobe attacking or guarding a premises. So people presume that is what they are all like.
We have a Golden Retriever which would way out do our old Dobe when it comes to warning us of people coming etc. but because they are portrayed as sweet gentle dogs people will just ignore her, not all Goldens are sweet. Our dobe was the biggest sook you could ask for. I miss him heaps.
We have several, so I know what you mean. People I've known for 8-12 years and have been around my dobes still will not get out of their car without honking the horn and someone greeting them in the driveway. Unfortunately, they will always carry the scars from a few bad seeds from many years ago.

Don't get me wrong, I am sure they would protect my home and my family with every ounce of their being if it came down to it. But otherwise, they would never hurt anyone.
