My dog will not eat or drink unless I am home. I know this is a pack mentality of waiting until the alpha of the pack is present before you eat, but it is rather goofy to see a dog drink and eat like it hasn't had anything for days when the food and water was right there all along.
Anyone else have a dog that does this?

Yes. It isn't really all that strange. My Shiba Inu has a pack mentality about anything, most especially food. He will back off of it for any human, but thinks that the cat is below him in the heirarchy and often tries to gobble all of the cat's food if he can reach it. A friend of mine has two rescued (from the side of the road type rescue) pit bull terriers, females. One will eat freely, the other has to go in another room because she will not eat if there are people or the other dog is present - she is an extreme exampe of a subordinate dog. She feels she is not allowed to eat if more dominant beings are present, so if there are people or the other dog is around, she simply won't; they discovered this the hard way, she went about three days without eating very much (and was already very emaciated) when they first got her before I told them to put her in another room to eat.
That's strange. Setup a video camera and see what its doing while you're away.
Yah. I thought it was annoying at first, but then I felt really special that my dog waited all day to eat his food till I came back.
:]
Ooooo, that's creepy.
Yes, all three of our dogs are like this, from my ten year old dalmation to my daughter's five month old Lab puppy. We were beginning to think that we were the only people whose dogs did this. Since we realized they weren't eating when we weren't home anyway, we started feeding them at least the two adults anyway in the morning before anyone left and in the evening when we had our evening meal. Although we continued to leave water out for them at all times.
Many humans claim to be social drinkers. Sounds like your dog is a social eater. It's sad to eat alone.
I have 3 dachshunds so:
1) they are never alone even when I'm gone and
2) they always race to see who can empty the bowl first and
3) they'd eat anything that didn't eat them first, so very rarely is even a crumb overlooked.
