My puppy is 4 months old. I just attempted to cut her nails. One of them I cut too high. She let out a quick yelp. She didn't continue crying, but there seemed to be quite a bit of blood for a nail. Is there typically alot of bleeding? I crated her for now after I washed her and applied pressure, but she'll probably have to go out in the middle of the night now - Is it safe for her to walk on it - the yard is grass and dirt? The bleeding stopped after a few min., but started again once she chased the cat up the stairs. HELP!!!

You can apply cornstarch or flour to the nail to staunch the bleeding. Afterwards, please place you puppy in a confined space so that the clot is not dislodged. What happened is that you cut the nail right beyond the quick (past the nailbed and into the vein). This can cause quite a lot of bleeding. You dog is safe to walk. I recommend confining her so that she will not bleed all over your house. The next time you want to cut your puppy's nails, have some Clot-It Plus powder or silver nitrate sticks so that you can stop the bleeding. These products are inexpensive and can be found at your local vet clinic. If not, you can take an appointment at as groomer's, or have a vet do it.
Their veins grow into their nails which is why it bled. Keep it clean. You should have the groomer or vet cut her nails from now on. But don't worry thats totally normal.
put a sock on the foot if ur not sure.. it'll protect the dog from bacteria in the dirt and grass
added...
kidding
it should be safe to walk you cut the quick that will be painful if the bleed starts again just put it in lour.. not neosporun she may lick it and get sick
You cut into the quick. Painful. They act like you took the whole toe off, I know! Usually it bleeds freely, which cause you to freak, which causes them to freak even more as well.
You can use a styptic pencil or even flour to stop the bleeding, should it happen again.
She should be able to walk on it OK, you could always wash the paw when she comes back in after pm potty...
Just take the very tiniest tips off when trimming nails. Unfortunately this one bad experience may set her up to yelp and squirm for life (I have an 8 year old dachshund who struggled and yelled for years after I cut ONE nail a little too short. If he even saw the clippers come out he'd begin slinking off) I use a dremel to file his nails down, now.
Here is a good website to learn how to trim nails:

They make tools for clipping their nails, and it should come with instructions. you really don't need to clip them that much. but if you do there is, for lack of a better term, glue that pet supply stores sell that will stop the bleeding. hope this helps.
yes, this is what happens when they are cut too short...to stop the bleeding at home you can dip the toe in corn starch or flour. she's going to have to walk on it so let her but yes it will be sore for a couple days. try bending the paw and clipping just the tip off from the underside. it is easier to see the quik if you look at it from the underside.
It should be safe to go outside. You can put some Neosporin triple antibiotic cream on it to help prevent infection. It will probably be sensitive for a few days, and it can easily break back open (as you've already seen). Try to limit her activity for the next couple of days to give it a chance to heal. In the future, get some styptic powder (on brand is QuikStop), available at the pet store. If you cut too deep again, just put the powder on to clot the blood and prevent so much bleeding.
She'll be fine, but be careful you cut her quick and that hurts! If you keep doing it, she won't trust you and you won't be able to do her nails easily.
Right now while it is a puppy, get you some finger nail clippers and just clip the ends so they are not pointed sharp.
Be careful not to clip the vein as this is painful to them and cause bleeding. You need to keep a powder around to apply if ever clipped. Look on the net i forget what it is called. It is used to stop bleeding instantly. No nerospruen or
etc.. as she will lick it and could get poiseoned or sick..not a good idea..
She should be fine, just check her in the mourning and make sure it is not effected. Dogs get cuts on their pads and nails all of the time, it will heel. next time look under the nail and make sure you are not catching the meat under it.
it was her quick u cut it hurts and some will freak the next time u go to their nails...so with puppies i always start just doing the little tips once a week...gets them use to it. if it happens again they make qwick stop. or baking soda does the trick to stop the bleeding and pinching above the nail. good luck and yeah dog will be fine to to go out to wee!. speaking for which my dogs need done...
