Any advice on keeping a puppy?

i have just got a puppy. i have had dogs before but never a pup i know that she needs worming injections etc but at what age do they get wormed and injected? she is just over 5 weeks old and i want to do this as soon as possible but at the right time. i rang the vet thats local and they would charge me just for chatting to them. if anyone who has had or has a puppy could help me i would be grateful.also she likes loads of cuddles and when i put her in her bed she cries and makes so much noise that i give in nd take her out. any tips on how to get her to love her bed? thanks
Answers:
Firstly you need to take she to the vet to get her checked over and weighed so they can give you a correct dose of wormer, soon the better for teh first wormer as the ten to contract worms from the mother, so that is important, the next thing is the first injections. My vet didn't charge me for just asking questions and they weighed my puppy for free and just charged me for the wormer, try another vet.
My new pup is 6 months now and is a little star, i have many dogs over the years.
The best thing to do about the bed is to put her in their and walk away and wait until she calms down and is quiet then go back and praise her. It may be heart breaking but it is the best thing to do.
I crate trained mine and it made it so much easier to toilet train plus he has somewhere where i can put him while i go out and i know he is safe.
It takes time for them to get used to it, what can help because she is so young is to put in a warm teddy and also a ticking clock the tick helps to calm them as it sounds like a heart beat.
You need to be fairly strict even it this age otherwise then quickly realise how to get there own way and training becomes harder later on.
How is God's name did you get a five week old puppy? It's against the LAW in most states in the U.S. to sell a pup before it's 8 weeks old!! Take her back to her mamadog and siblings right away. She should not be away from them until she is 10 weeks old.
You should make an appointment with the vet ASAP. She may be wormed now. They'll tell you the rest about shots and so on at your appointment. Before you got write down any questions you may think of so you don't forget. Congrats on you pup. May you have many years of happiness together;^)
You should take your girl in at 6 weeks old. She will need a complete check up and her shot. She will also be wormed then too.
YOu should not pick her up when she whines. She needs to learn to comfort herself to go to sleep. All pups whine when you first get them so she is doing what every pup does.
i crate trained my puppy and she always whined to get out every night, for the first night almost all night, but it got better each night to the point where she didnt make any noise. its just like a child, you have to be consistent. then we had an earthquake and she would refuse to go in and whined all night so i gave in and got her a dog bed. now shes always sneaking up to the couch and the bed. so i guess the point of this story is...your actions will have consequences so start training that pup and dont stop!
At 5 weeks, your pup is a bit young to be away from it's mother.

You need to take her to see a vet as soon as possible. This should be done with any puppy or dog you bring home to ensure that it is healthy and sound, particularly when they are this young. Vets are expensive, but so are puppies. With all of her vaccinations, dewormers, and spaying, you're going to be looking at at least 300-400 dollars, if not more.

When you worm your dog, it's an oral medication, not an injection. They typically get 2-3 doses of panacur or another type of wormer. You want to get it from the vet and not the over the counter type--the stuff you buy OTC isn't as good and your vet will know better.

Your pup will also need 3-4 rounds of her DHLPPC vaccination (stands for Distemper, Hepatitus, Leptospirosis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, and Coronavirus), her rabies vaccination at 16 weeks of age, and preferably a bordetella vaccination (optional, but best to have done to be safe). The bordetella can be either an injection or a nasal spray depending on how your vet does it.

Again, the best thing to do is to take her to the vet ASAP. He or she will do a thorough exam, start her on her vaccinations, and set a schedule for you as to when she should receive her next round of shots as well as her spaying surgury.
make sure she knows who the alpha male is
I brought home a 6 1/2 week old Lab puppy a few months ago and she had her first shots at 6 weeks old. She was dewormed at age 3 weeks ,4 weeks and 5 1/2 weeks. The breeder had done this before I got her at 6 1/2 weeks.
I took my puppy to the Vet as soon as I brought her home for a good check up. Her next shots were when she was 9 weeks old. Then her next round was when she was 12 weeks old.
Puppies have to be dewormed more often according if all the worms are gone or not.
Good Luck with your new puppy. My puppy is now 14 weeks old. She is house broke now!! It took me 3 1/2 weeks to train her to go outside on a leash.

Good for you wanting to make sure all the shots are given at the right time.
Puppies can't have their rabies shot until they are at least 4 months old. All Vets do this a little bit different. I started my puppy on flea%26 tick medicine when she was 6 1/2 weeks old. The ticks are really bad this year. I use top spot from Frontline!
Good Luck
Puppies that young need their mother. Take her to the Vet immediately she has special nutrition needs at that age, and shots.
Save on the call, bring the up to the vet quick. It'll need a vaccination right away. While you're there, they'll schedule your next visit and you can ask them everything you want about the pup.
5 weeks is really too young for a puppy to have left her mother. If you want her to get used to her bed, you have to ignore her when she cries. Everytime you take her out, she has won! If you want information on worming etc. , try contacting the PDSA, there may be one in your area:

hi, my vet has been an invaluable scource of free information and its a shame that yours charges for this.
My Pups got their first vaccinations at 6-8 weeks old with a booster at 12-16 weeks.
With pups you have to be consistent They are very smart and if you give in once to their pleas for attention then you will be back and forward forever! . I used a crate to train my pups and didn't go back to them for" whining" and now they sleep all night with out disturbing me till I'm ready to let them out in the morning. I found Victoria Stillwells book invaluable and got it cheap in amazon. Good luck !
hi, we have a 14 week old pup, got him when he was 9 weeks old had a week of sleepless nights due to him whining and howling all night, was told by our vet that once you put them to bed on a night you should never keep going down to them if they are crying ,just leave them to it as long as they can not harm themselves, now he sleeps all through the night, peace at last. as for vacinations pups have their 1st one at 8 weeks then 2 weeks after that they have their 2nd one then a week after that they can go for walks.some times i leave the radio on low so he thinks we are still there, good luck xxx
5weeks is very young to have a puppy, did you buy her from a breeder? She should still be with her mum ideally.Injections can start from 6/7weeks plus and she should be being wormed every 2 weeks, your vet will advice you on that.Your pup can still use the garden etc though with out cause for concern, the same go's for socilising her you can still hold her in your arms in new places/situations.Try to egnore your pup at night as dogs esp pups are very quick to learn that the more they cry and whine etc they know that you'll come and let them out.She should settle down after a few desperate attempts to get your attention.Good luck.
