Description:
True grit. True devotion. True love. These tributes are used often to describe the American Bulldog -- a hardy, athletic, all-purpose working dog. The American Bulldog is a loving family companion, good with children and other pets, yet at the same time, fearlessly determined. It has been known to display heroic acts of courage in protecting its master. The American Bulldog has also been used to hunt everything from squirrel to bear, and has been trained to drive cattle and guard stock from predators. The American Bulldog should be evaluated as a working dog, and exaggerations or faults should be penalized in proportion to how much they interfere with the dogs ability to work.

The essential characteristics of the American Bulldog are those which enable it to work as a hog and cattle catching dog, and a protector of personal property. The American Bulldog is a gentle, loving family companion who is fearless enough to face an angry bull or a human intruder; Good with children; Good with pets

Brush coat with a firm bristle brush or rubber mitt and bathe only when necessary. Puppies should have early socialization.

Health Issues:
A very healthy, hardy dog. Some strains have hip dysplasia.

History/Origin:
Bulldogs in England were originally working dogs who drove and caught cattle and guarded their masters' property. At one time, the breed was used in the grueling sport of bull baiting. With the outlawing of the sport in England in 1835, the original type of Bulldog disappeared from Britain and was replaced with the less athletic dog we now know as the English Bulldog. Yet the original Bulldog was preserved by immigrants who brought their working dogs with them to the American South. By the end of World War II, the last remnants of the working English Bulldog were disappearing in the U.S. Thanks to the breeding programs of John D. Johnson and Allen Scott, the breed was brought back from the brink of extinction. The American Bulldog was recognized by the United Kennel Club in 1999 in the rare, working class.

You got a dog without doing any research on the breed?

Google the national club and get info from Am. Bulldog breeders rather than here.

They are not what I would get for an apartment. But any dog can live in an apartment with a commited owner that gets the dog out for lots of exercise.

They can be very aggressive. They can also be very sweet and good with people. It depends on their bloodlines and how they are raised and trained.

They need to be well trained ! They are too powerful to be allowed to think they are in charge.

Ask the breeder these questions. I'm amazed they sold you this dog for an apartment. Plus you may get thrown out of your place.they are listed on Dangerous Dog laws in some areas.
they can be but any dog can be aggressive its all in the way you train them and treat them. they get about 55 to 75 lbs. they are a loyal dog just watch them around children don't let the child hit or pull on tail or ear but if the are raised around children they should be fine take them for walks everyday and when you can let them run in a dog park they love to play
American Bulldogs should not be excessively timid, shy or aggressive towards man and preferably not overly aggressive with other dogs. An American Bulldog should never be confused with uniquely different breeds such as the American Staffordshire Terrier or the American Pit Bull Terrier. The American Bulldog is a brave and determined, but not hostile dog. Alert and self-confident, this breed genuinely loves children. It is known for its acts of heroism towards its master. These dogs have fought wild dogs, bulls and even fire. It is said "fighting off one of these dogs is like fighting an animal that possesses an alligator's head and a python's body." Yet when called off by their handler, they immediately obey. No wonder they are said to have "true grit, true devotion and true love." Because of its strong protective instincts, the American Bulldog should be well-socialized and obedience trained at an early age. Some may be aggressive with other dogs and reserved with strangers. They need to be around people to be truly happy. This breed tends to drool and slobber.

I suggest you talk to your local vet or animal shelter/ welfare about your situation ( living in an appartment with a medium to large dog) and got to a book store and look for a guide to american bulldogs.
Well.. This is what i know.. I Don't own a bulldog but my best friend breeds them.. so I know a lot about them!

Well bulldogs are not very energetic dogs and they have don't require much exercise maybe around 10 - 15 mins of exercise a day. But they are pretty playful and incredibly affectionate. They aren't friendly towards other dogs but are very friendly towards cats and people and strangers and mainly kids even though they can be a bit tempermental at times. When it comes to training they are a little below average.. so you might have a bit of trouble in that category. It's a pretty good watch dog and it doesn't need much grooming at all and it doesn't like the hot nor the cold so make sure that the place in which your dog sleeps in neither too hot nor too cold!
Some major health concerns are : CHD, KCS, stenotic nares, elongated soft palate, shoulder luxation, internalized tail
Average size of female: HEIGHT: 12-15, WEIGHT: 40
Average size of male: HEIGHT:12-15, WEIGHT: 50
Their life span is around 8 - 10 years
Note that will probably help a lot ( my friend always complains about this problem so keep this in mind) : It is prone to skin fold dermatitis unless the wrinkles are kept clean and dry. It cannot tolerate heat. Special precautions must be taken when anesthetizing a bulldog. Caesarian deliveries are commonly needed. Hip radiographs show most bulldogs to be dysplastic but few show overt symptoms.

Hope this helped!!
