I just want to know if anyone else as ever done an alpha roll over, and if so if they have ever had any bad experiences. I have done it a few times with dogs I had rescued that had dominates issues, and have had great success, but it is always a last resort. Any tales?
Answers:
An Alpha Roll only works if you are Alpha. If the dog truly thinks it is alpha you could get bitten badly. Timing is also crucial or you can make a dog much worse.
Very few people should use an alpha roll.
I tend to tell people to use : Nothing In Life is Free to assert their dominance and teach the dog it's place.
Alpha rolls should always be a last resort.they are a strong statement and you better be able to back it up.
This can of course back fire badly. Doing an alpha roll can result in the dog esculating the experience to a higher level and you or the dog becoming hurt. That being said, my mother used alpha rolls on her mastifs and seemed to have good results with them. I personally dont see much of a need for them. I think there are other more effective ways to train a dog.
Ive read about but never tried it. I just don't see where it would work as well as other methods of consistent training.
I really don't know if the alpha roll over works. I read an excerpt from Tamar Geller's book (The loved dog : the playful, nonaggressive way to teach your dog good behavior) and it makes a lot of sense to me. In her book she talks about the alpha roll over and how a lot of people like to use it because it shows a dog who is dominant by putting him in a submissive position and you in a dominant position, and this logic comes from the fact that this is a behavior seen in wolf packs. However, the big difference is that we, as people, are forcing a dog into the submissive position, whereas wolves will scrap and duke it out before the submissive wolf willingly goes into the belly-up position on his own. The dominant wolf does not grab him and turn him up on his back. I think this is an important distinction.
That is not to say that it can't work. For example, I have seen Cesar Millan put his dogs in the submissive belly-up position when they begin to display unwanted aggression with a simple hand gesture or vocal gesture.
I think it's a risky thing to try on your own if you have no experience dealing with dominant dogs. You never know when a very dominant dog may feel threatened by your behavior (forcing the alpha roll) and really lash out against you.
