My male akita will be 14 years old this fall. I have had him since he was 7 weeks old. He still has all teeth, and can see well. He is going def, and will still bolt out the front door and run like the wind if given the chance. He usually lays around and every night around 11:pm , he goes out the dog door and turns around and runs back in like a grey hound thru the house, playing I guess, about 8 times in a row. Has he lost his mind? He also will go out his dog door and go to the other side of the house and bark at the other door to let him in, he will also do this about 8 times. He looks like he is playing and having fun, but, I think he is mentally checking out?

You may be right.I have 2 Akitas, 11 years old and an 9 year old.great dogs...Give him a dog treat for me please
You may be right. In human age the dog is 105.
As dogs age, the can pick new (often strange) behaviors. Like humans, dogs change as they get older, but if he is other wise healthy there shouldnt be any concern.
Some dogs do go a little senile with old age, at least he seems to be enjoying himself. You should be proud you have raised a dog to this age and still be healthy enough to run around.
Hopefully he will be around for a few more years enjoying himself. Enjoy him and spoil him while you can.
I have an Akita too and he runs around the house like crazy when he's playing. I think as long as the dog is not hurting himself, he isn't doing any harm.
I had another dog that got very confused when she got older. She was the sweetest dog in the world, but when she got really old she became kind of mean. She would snap at the family and even bit me once. The vet said she had doggie altimers (spelling?). Unless your dog is becoming like this, I don't think you have anything to worry about.
Good luck!
Theres drug therapy for doggy dementia. (Dementia is also known as senility or cognitive dysfunction and may be a normal aging change in older pet.) Check with your vet, you do have options...theres something similar to doggy prozac.
Maybe he has just taught you how to play what he considers to be a really good game? My thought is that if he were suffering some kind of doggie dementia, it would be showing up at other times during the day, not just at 11:00 pm.
